The unbearable hypocrisy of Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s assault on France’s Emmanuel Macron

In the wake of a terrorist’s murder of French school teacher Samuel Paty, French President Emmanuel Macron stood up for freedom of expression and defended France’s tradition of laicism. Simply put, Macron recognizes that religious passion neither can justify murder nor serve as a reason to dilute fundamental individual freedoms. As Macron has made the defense of …

Erdogan triples down on imperial fanaticism – Washington Examiner

Where does this leave us?

Well, with the increasing obvious but sad reality that Erdogan is no longer a partner to Europe’s or America’s democratic security. Instead, Erdogan requires confrontation. The United States should join with the European Union in preparing sanctions on the Turkish central bank. The Turkish lira is already at pathetic lows (in no insignificant part, thanks to Erdogan’s economic mismanagement). Let’s see whether the sultan feels so supreme when his economy implodes.

The Elysee official, who asked not to be named, also said that France had noted “the absence of messages of condolence and support” from the Turkish president after the beheading of teacher Samuel Paty outside Paris.

Erdogan seeks to restore Ottoman Empire, warns French Army General Pierre de Villiers – Armenian News Agency

“Erdogan’s Turkey, with his statements, is now guided by the strategy of restoring the Ottoman Empire. And Turkey embodies this manifest with relevant military gestures. For example, the destruction of Kurds in Syria, actions in Nagorno Karabakh,” Pierre de Villiers told BFM TV.

The general emphasized that someday the international community, and France in particular, must put an end to this.

“We cannot agree that a country like Turkey, whose negotiations over the accession to the EU aren’t officially completed to this day, continues such rhetoric and such actions by being a NATO member,” he said.
