UN Security Council calls for cancellation of decision on Varosha coast – Orthodox Times

The UN Security Council, which held consultations behind closed doors on Friday afternoon under the chairmanship of Russia’s Permanent Representative, Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia, has called on Turkey to cancel its decision to reopen Varosha coast.

During the consultations, the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General in Cyprus and Head of the UNFICYP, Elizabeth Spehar, briefed the members of the Security Council on the latest developments in Varosha.

Following the consultations, the President of the Security Council issued the following statement:

“The Security Council reaffirms the status of Famagusta as defined in previous UN Security Council resolutions, including Resolution 550 (1984) and Resolution 789 (1992).

The Security Council expresses concern about the announcement made by Ankara on the 6th of October on the reopening of the Famagusta coastline and requests the cancellation of those decisions in order to avoid unilateral actions which could escalate tensions on the island.

The Security Council reiterates its support to the Secretary-General and his intention to convene a meeting, as agreed between the Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot leaders at their meeting with the Secretary-General in November 2019.”
